How to Choose the Right Parasol Size

Sizing isn’t just about looks — the right parasol keeps everyone covered, feels balanced for your space, and lasts longer because it’s matched to the job.

Follow our 2-foot rule: your parasol’s canopy should extend at least 2 feet past the edge of your table or seating on all sides for proper shade coverage.

Find Your Size in Under a Minute

Measure Your Space

Measure the length and width of your table, or the seating area you want shaded. Write both numbers down.

Add 4 Feet to the Longest Side

Add 2 feet on each side (4 feet total) to get your minimum canopy diameter. A 5ft table needs a 9ft parasol minimum.

Match to a Size Below

Round up to the nearest parasol size. When in doubt, go bigger — you’ll never regret extra shade on hot days.

Expert Sizing Advice

Cantilever vs. Market: Cantilever parasols offset the pole to one side, giving you unobstructed table space. If you hate working around a center pole, go cantilever — usually sized 10ft+.

Round vs. Rectangular: Round canopies suit round tables, rectangular canopies cover dining tables more efficiently. Match the canopy shape to the shape of what you’re shading.

Windy Areas: Larger parasols catch more wind. If you live somewhere breezy, choose a vented canopy (all ours are) and invest in a heavier base (50+ lbs).

Sun Position: Look for a parasol with a tilt mechanism if your seating area is in direct sun for most of the day — you can angle the shade as the sun moves.
